Dissertation : "Ecophysiological and Environmental Control of Stomates in Douglas-fir and other Species". His honors include the Bush Foundation Fellowship from the University of Minnesota, Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Xi, Gamma Sigma Delta, and has been the top extramural funding recipient from the University of Florida from 1987 - 1990 before coming to Washington State University in 1997.

Stress ecophysiology of forest trees, including effects of abiotic (water, nutrition, carbon dioxide, air and soil pollution) and biotic (disease) stresses.  I am researching aspects of riparian zone ecology and management including the role of trees in protecting stream water quality.  As Director of the WSU Poplar Research Program, I oversee the development and testing of hybrid poplars for growth and disease resistance, manage clone arboreta for breeding purposes, and conduct research on the production physiology of fast growing species including Populus and Salix.
